I SPY: Art Of The In - Between

May 3, 2017

The Met Gala - Did you watch the red carpet on Monday night?  Who was your favorite?  Mine was J.Lo.  She always pulls off old fashion Hollywood so well…but she along with majority of the attendees were not in theme with the costume exhibit Rei Kawabuko/ Comme des Garcons: Art of the In-Between.  Did they not get the memo, or just weren't brave enough to go outside of their basic norm?

Did you think Rihanna and Pharell's wife, Helen, looked over the top silly in their costumes?  So did I.  But now I take it back.  They were absolutely on point with the theme!  You got to give them credit for honoring the designer.  That is what this exhibit is all about after all.

I also now understand the inspiration behind Lala Anthony, and a few others sheer almost nothing numbers.  She wasn't just making a statement that she's hot and now single!  HA.

Out of the 150+ samples of Rei Kawakubo's women's wear design for Comme des Garcons on display, these were a few others that caught my eye.

Eccentric?  Totally!  That is the designers trademark, and Comme des Garcons moto to 'wear your freedom'.  Clearly that message was portrayed through out the avant-garde exhibit.  It is fashion at a different level.   Very different from last years Manus X Machina exhibit.  That was wearable art for me.  This current costume exhibit is not fashion I could personally pull off wearing.  But the bold details and architectural lines is definitely art worthy of being admired.

This exhibit opens to the public tomorrow Thursday, May 4, 2017.  Today and yesterday is only open to Met members.  If you are a member get there today, while it's still quiet, before it becomes a mad house.  But otherwise you have time.  It's on till September 4, 2017.
