I SPY: Off The Wall

May 4, 2016

Isn't it cool when you find something you weren't expecting?  Over the weekend I was waiting for a table at a cafe next door to The Hole gallery.  Decided to pop in to kill some time and instead got side tracked and came out a different woman!

Is this funny to you?  I'm a sucker for pop culture.  My kids are growing up with Lebron James as their King and I grew up with Michael Jackson as my King.  The two are drastically different characters, and the artist Eric Yahnker is bringing 'bad' to a whole new level!  The mix of play in this piece called 'Kings Court' is powerful in scale, with a ridiculous contrast of Lebron's masculinity next to Michael's more feminine side in his dance pose, shirt unbuttoned and loafers.  It made me scratch my head and ponder over the idea that made me laugh out loud.  As did many other pieces in his 'Steve Job's Day Off' exhibition.  I won't spoil it for you, by showing all his works, in case you wish to visit before it gets pulled down on May 22, 2016.  But another one that cracked me up... look at Sarah Palin!  CRAZY gal.

The other exhibition currently at the gallery is Jim Joe's ~ 'Look Means Memorize'.  30 small paintings of text written by hand.  Here are some of my favorite words of wisdom off the wall.

Take a walk through this gallery if your ever down in the Bowery.  Depending on where you are coming from you may find this art disturbing.  But I found it humorous!  Is that just me?
