I SPY: First Monday In May

May 5, 2016

Is it just me, or is the Met Gala turning into more of a red carpet moment then the Oscars?  I haven't been impressed with the fashion at the Oscars in the last few years.  I just feel nothing new has been brought to the table.  But the Met Gala fashion is something else.  Now that's special!  Did you see the recent Met Gala 2016 opening, Manus x Machina?  The robot themed event that was on last Monday night.  It was an extremely star studded event with everyone dressed to the nines.  Each designer had their own hand selected muse, whom they chose to represent their design and setting.  It's a powerful A - list crowd with a range of different icons, from hollywood stars, to musicians, to politicians.  Yes it's very theatrical, and some losers spoiled it.  But overall I thought it was spectacular, and my fave was Claire Danes glow in the dark gown by Zac Posen.  GENIUS magic.  Got to get to the Met before August 14, 2016 to view this exhibition in real life.

After Monday night I was intrigued to watch the movie now playing in theaters THE FIRST MONDAY IN MAY.   It goes behind the scenes of one of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's most attended fashion exhibitions.  This event is chaired by Vogue's editor Anna Wintour, a.k.a Dragon Lady!  You know she doesn't miss a beat.  They show the planning involved to set up the exhibition for 40 designers, how much time went into thinking of every detail, and how everything was so meticulous, and staged to the T.  Impressive to learn about how this event came to fruition.  Now I have even more respect for this annual charitable event that goes beyond the red carpet glitz.

Have you seen this movie yet?  You should!  The film focuses on the set up of last years 2015 Met Gala, where the theme was China: Through The Looking Glass.  Did you see that exhibition?  I did, and I enjoyed it a lot because of my roots.  The documentary film gives you more insight of the thought process behind mixing East with West, and Chinese culture with modern aesthetics.  A big emphasis was also given to Rihanna the Queen of the night, wearing Chinese designer Guo Pei's embroidered gown.  She looked amazing, and wow that embroidery and head piece she wore was art!  Do you consider fashion art?  It is an on going debate, which is also touched in the film.  Watch it if your a fashion or art lover!

Extra bonus for you New Yorkers...This Saturday, May 7, 2016 after the 7:45pm showing of this movie at Paris theaters there will be a surprise guest doing a Q & A.  Guess who?  It's Andre Leon Talley the contributing editor at Vogue!  He's a fun guy.  Catch him if you can!
