I SPY: Farmer's Wife

May 10, 2016

Ever been on a working farm?  Blue Hill is a famous farm to table restaurant set on an 80 acre farm known as Stone Barns in Poncantico Hills, NY.  Everything served in the restaurant is either from their own fields, or locally sourced pastures.  Their grounds are lush and well kept, and we got to see cows, chickens, goats and sheep.  Our highlight though was collecting eggs.  That's a first for us!

It is a real treat to eat here, especially after seeing where your food is grown.  Reservations open 60 days in advance and usually get booked up that far ahead of time!  It is a prix fix tasting menu that takes 3.5 hours.  Trust me it's amazing, I did it a decade ago pre- babies!  But my kids would never be able to sit through that now, so instead for Mother's Day we opted to head out there to enjoy their grounds and eat at their Blue Hill Cafe.  It is counter service, no reservations, outdoor seating and as casual as can be.  But the quality of food wasn't jeopardized.  Still organic, from their farm and just as good as their restaurant.  Just less fancy.

We had THEIR chicken!  Also on the table was their goat cheese and asparagus open face sandwich, tuna sandwich, frittata, parsnip faro salad, and had to try a hard boiled egg.  I don't know how to explain it but you can taste the difference when it is fresh.  Dessert was the Cappuccino to go for the ride home.  All 100% YUM…and slightly regretting we didn't bring home any baked goods for breakfast the next day.  Saving calories!

If you plan to go on a weekend I advise purchasing tickets online in advance.  They do sell out!  On weekends they have a list of activities scheduled that are fun for adults, kids and the family.  Other then dining on the property these are nice options for you to join in order to learn about the working farm.

So I got to experience a day in the life of a farmer, reaping the benefits of eating fresh and enjoying the open grounds.  Kids loved it.  But note to self, I will not make a good farmer's wife!  Once a city girl, always a city girl!
