I SPY: Point & Shoot

Mar 4, 2016

Who still uses a real camera?  My Canon DSLR camera has been sitting in the closet for over a year collecting dust.  We've been going to some off beat places in the last year: Brazil, Colombia, and Morocco.  Not always are we in the best neighborhoods, and not always do I take 'proper' photos.  I can be a bit shady behind the lens!  But that's the only way to capture raw street life, and I don't want to be obtrusive with a big camera.  That's how I've ended up solely shooting with my iPhone.

As you know I'm off to India soon and I already know it is going to be an amazing photographic journey.  I've been thinking if I should bring a 'real' camera?  I got this Fuji Film X-A2 camera for Christmas.  It is an automatic point and shoot, but can also be switched to manual mode to take artistic photos, which I like.  It can transfer photos to your phone by wifi, which is convenient.  Plus it is small enough to be discreet.

So I played with my new toy and did a test run at The National.  Lets give you an eye test!  Can you tell which images are the Fuji Film photos and which were taken by my iPhone?

So…??  Do you know which were the iPhone pics?  All the A's.  The Fuji Film photos were all B's.  Do you see a major difference between the two batches A & B?  I barely see a contrast!  P.S.  These photos are all untouched, not enhanced, no filter or anything…NADA.  They look pretty good raw, but you know can look even better once beautified.

With a naked eye it's hard to tell the difference.  The quality between the two camera devices will be noticeable if you print or blow up your photos though.  But I never print photos anymore!  Do you?  All I ever do with my photos is either post them on this blog, use in social media, or use them in photo albums I get printed.  So for what I do it seems to be more of a headache to have an extra device that I have to fiddle with more then my straightforward iPhone.  I don't know about this.  Back to the drawing board on this burning question!  Do I really need this extra baggage going to India?  I'm not sold yet, but I'm going to keep playing with the Fuji Film camera this weekend to give it a fair try.  Maybe it needs time to grow on me…like many other things in my life!  HA.
