I SPY: Jackson Hole

JACKSON HOLE: Feb 2014

Are you an avid skier?  Then Jackson Hole is for you!  The most fantastic snow I've ever skied on in my life.  Waking up to 11" of fresh powder on our last day was a real treat to ski on.  Epic!  However it was cold.  Thats an understatement…FREEZING in February! Temperature in the teens - 12F during the day (not including windshield) and obviously drops at night to I'm not sure how low...because if I did know I wouldn't of gone out for dinner!  But if I "Miss 50F is already too cold for me!" can survive you will to with hand and boot warmers, a face mask, and good thermal underwear.  So go brave it!

It's a cool, western town, with an edgy vibe.  Pretty casual.  Not glitzy like Aspen, CO. Quite a few celebrities own vacation homes there such as Sandra Bullock & Harrison Ford.  Did I see them?  No!  Think - breath taking views of Teton Mountains, ranches, cowboy boots, horses, and one of natures best Yellowstone National Park which I unfortunately didn't have time to see.  Reason to visit again!

Upon arrival we were greeted by a cowboy near baggage claim serving us free drinks.  First class service!  Is this a standard welcome greeting for Jackson Hole Airport or was I just lucky? Not complaining!  There were little dixie cups filled with OJ for the kids and Mimosa for moi!  After our dreadful turbulent flight I was in need of a few shots so it was a very welcoming surprise.

Already sold by free Mimosas, and then spotting this Fashionista waiting for her luggage looking fabulous (Ahh…so GLAM!) I had a instant good vibe about Jackson Hole before exiting the airport.

PLAY:

CONTINENTAL DIVIDE DOG SLEDS:
Awesome half day trip with lunch and hotel pick up/drop off included.  You get to help pick and interact with the friendly Alaskan racing Huskie dogs who pull your sled.  Before the end of the ride we each got a chance to try mushing and lead the pack.  Dress warmly!

ELK REFUGE SLEIGH RIDE:
Get up close and personal with thousands of Elk on a horse drawn sleigh ride.  Its fascinating!  Great excursion for photographers to capture amazing photos.  I recommend you make a reservation and purchase your tickets ahead of time.  It's not mandatory but I luckily had done it before showing up, because when we arrived for our allocated sleigh ride time it was sold out with many people having to wait till the next day to get on a sleigh ride. Don't let that be you!

KING TUBES SNOW TUBING PARK:
Not only did the kids love the thrill, but I did too!  Especially when the guy at the top spins you before releasing you down hill.  A fun run that you can do as many times as you like.  There is a radar that caught us speeding down at 45 mph. Whoa...Really?  I'm not sure how accurate that is, but if it is we should've been wearing seat belts!  Must be 42" tall and above.

SKI / SNOWBOARD:
The area is known to have one of the highest vertical drops in North America with challenging terrain.  But also plenty of runs for all levels not just expert skiers. They've named the kid trails: Barbie Woods, Elvis Rock, Transformer Bumps, etc.  We got a kick out of that!

Private Ski Lessons:
My youngest had private ski lessons with Aaron Cavagnolo for the whole week we were there.  He made amazing progress, had a blast and months later is still talking about Aaron!  Aaron sends you progress reports of what your child learned, trails he went to, and gives you a general fill in of the day.  Nice to get a briefing when you return from tackling double black diamonds while your kid is at ski school!

MILLION DOLLAR COWBOY BAR:
Its kitschy but famous.  C'mon you got to experience a wild, wild, west saloon!

Outside across the street check out the arch made out of antlers.  I fell in LOVE!

FOUR SEASONS SPA:
You deserve a massage!  Or just go get any spa service to allow yourself some quiet ME time, and to wind down.  Its a nice tranquil spa and I hung around after my massage for over an hour before I had to go pick up the boys from ski school.  I could've stayed all day!

- LIFT RESTAURANT/ BAR:
Neighborhood pub.  Lunch, Apres Ski and Dinner.  Casual and a perfect spot to eat at after snow tubing since its right next door at the base of Snow King mountain.  Their chicken fried steak is authentic, but their Fat Bastard Burger rules (cheddar, swiss, pastrami, sauerkraut, bacon).  The name says it all!

- THE SPUR:
They call it mountain cuisine!  Open for lunch, apres ski & dinner.  We came in starving so ordered a bunch of their Bar Bites and shared it Tapas style, along with some gourmet style Nachos Carne Cartel that was different because of the kobe beef.  Delish! Then we topped off our meal with the coconut cheesecake and rolled ourselves home!

SHOP:

Antlers, Antlers, Antlers…the current trend in home decor now!  I didn't have any spare time to shop during store hours, but walking through town at night window shopped.  How sad is that?! So many of the stores sell antlers in all different variations - table top accessories, wall hangings, chandeliers, cutlery, furniture, jewelry etc.  Gosh, I regret not buying a antler souvenir from Jackson Hole.  Don't come home with the same regret as me…make time to shop!

Can you get anymore spoiled?!!

Downs:  Located in Teton Village which is 30 mins from the Town of Jackson.  In a way it was fine, because it was good down time for my kids to take a power nap to refresh after skiing on the ride into town.

TIPS:

DANIEL'S CASH CAB:
Call him if you need a ride to airport or into town.  He accepts credit cards.  An amusing character  that can fill you in on the local scene, and he's got disco lights in his cab.  Groovy!
T: 307.413.3770

PUBLIC BUS:
If your not ok with spending $60+ one way on cab fare into town from Teton Village then learn to take the public bus.  Or do like me and ask the concierge to tell you what bus# and time to hop on!  Buses are generally on time, easy, efficient and sooooo much cheaper - adults $3 and kids under 8 are free from Teton Village to Town.  Cash only.

GROW A BEARD?:
Is it just me or did I notice that almost every man in Jackson Hole had a beard?  Yes facial hair is the top fashion statement now for Men everywhere.  But I also think a beard is there for a purpose in Jackson Hole…to protect your face from the cold!  Food for thought.

AIRPORT:
Carry your winter coats on board with you.  You exit the plane on the tarmac and have to walk into the airport terminal.  Same when you depart.  Trust me - in February you will freeze your butt off in a 5 min walk without a coat. Don't be macho!

Is this your kind of trip?  I would love to return to Jackson Hole again in summer time and enjoy the outdoors and nature more.  I imagine Yellowstone would be gorgeous in summer.  I also think the next time I visit I should stay in Town of Jackson for a few nights to experience the nightlife, local culture and get a different perspective.  If you've been to Jackson Hole before and have any tips for my next future trip please drop me a line!
